New York, NY, 1985 - 1989 The energy and excitement of metropolitan New York, so different from the closed world of his native China, led Xu to see art in a completely new light and inspired a radically different style. The unique medium he developed then, sumi ink/watercolor on rice paper over canvas with acrylic and oil, would become his signature medium. These cityscapes record Xu's emotions at the freedom and excitement he finds in his new home.
